A new AdSense interface: now in beta

Today, at the Content Revenue Strategies conference in New York City, we announced that a small group of publishers will begin testing a new AdSense interface in limited beta.  Inspired by the feedback we've heard directly from you, the new interface includes features designed around your top three requests:

Provide insights to help you make more informed decisions about your sites.

The new AdSense interface includes more detailed performance reports and enables you to view daily stats in graphical formats. It also will provide you with additional metrics such as the amount you've earned from various ad, targeting and bid types. Here's a glimpse at what the new reports currently look like in our beta:

Offer you more control over the ads that appear on your sites.

We're also continuing to make improvements to the Ad Review Center. Upcoming enhancements will give you more options to manage the ads that appear on your site, as well as a cleaner interface that makes it easier to find and review them within the Ad Review Center.

Help you manage your account more efficiently.

We've streamlined the AdSense interface to simplify common tasks, such as making a change to several ad units simultaneously. Additionally, to help you get the most out of AdSense, we've added more relevant help on every page, a message inbox for tips from our team, and alerts with important account related notices.

In order to collect feedback on these enhancements from publishers in multiple countries, we're rolling out the beta test of the new interface today in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Japanese.  Although we aren't able to extend invitations to additional publishers yet, we're planning to roll this test out to thousands of publishers over the coming weeks. We'll be sending email notifications to the beta test participants to let them know.

Thanks again for all of your feedback so far, and we'll be sure to let you know when we're able to offer the new interface more widely.

What ad formats are displayed through AdSense for video?

Right now, we'll be using two ad formats: an InVideo overlay ad and a text overlay ad.
  • InVideo overlay ads are Flash-based and will be targeted to publishers' content based on the relevance of advertisers' campaigns to your content. Advertisers may choose to include a companion video ad which opens when a user clicks on the overlay, pausing the content and playing a video ad within the video player. InVideo ads will compete in the Google auction and are paid on a cost-per-thousand impressions basis.
  • Text overlay ads are drawn from the campaigns of AdWords advertisers and may be contextually targeted to signals in your video and your site. These ads may also be placement-targeted to your site and appear within your video streams. When contextually targeted, text overlay ads are paid on a cost-per-click basis. When placement-targeted, they are paid on a cost-per-thousand impressions basis.

What is placement targeting?

One of the ways ads are targeted to AdSense publisher websites is through placement targeting. Placement targeting allows AdWords advertisers to choose specific ad placements where they'd like their ads to appear. An ad placement can be an entire website or a specific sub-set of ad units within that site, such as only ad units on sports pages or all ad units at the top of the page.
Advertisers find ad placements in several ways, including by listing websites where they'd like to advertise or by searching for placements that match the themes and topics they'd like to target.
If your site is part of the AdSense network, it should automatically be visible to advertisers as an available ad placement when they search for themes or topics related to the content of your site. You can also define your own ad placements using specific sub-sets of ad units on your site.

How do I link my AdSense account to Google Analytics?

To start receiving data from AdSense within your Google Analytics account, you must first choose an Analytics account to link AdSense to, and then make sure that both AdSense and Google Analytics code is on your webpages.*
To start linking accounts, look in your AdSense account for the link inviting you to integrate your accounts. This link appears on both the Overview and Advanced Reports pages. (If you don't see the link, please keep in mind that we're rolling out this feature gradually, and that you'll see the link only when we've activated it in your account.)

When you click the link, you'll be asked to create a new Analytics account, or indicate an existing Analytics account to link to.

Please note that to link to an existing Analytics account, your AdSense login must be an Administrator on that Analytics account. In other words, your AdSense login must work for your Analytics account as well before you can link to it. Learn troubleshooting tips if you're unable to link to your existing Analytics account.

If you have multiple Analytics accounts, be sure you know the name of the account you want to link to (as listed on the Analytics accounts Overview page) so that you can select that account during linking.
When you are done linking, you'll need to make sure that you are using Analytics tracking code on all of your webpages using AdSense. Learn more about the code you'll need on your pages.

Scenarios for linking AdSense to Analytics

Answers
1) I don't have a Google Analytics account to link to.
On the 'Getting Started' page, you're prompted to select either 'Create my free Google Analytics account' or 'I already have a Google Analytics account. Please link it to this AdSense account.' Select the first option. Click 'Continue.' Follow the set-up wizard to create a new Google Analytics account and link it to your AdSense account.

2) I have an existing Analytics account with only one profile.
This is the simplest case which requires a one-click linking process.
  1. On the 'Getting Started' page, you're prompted to select either 'Create my free Google Analytics account' or 'I already have a Google Analytics account. Please link it to this AdSense account.' Select the second option. Click 'Continue.'
  2. At Step 1, you'll see a confirmation message listing the Analytics account and profile you've linked your AdSense account to. No code changes are needed.
  3. Click 'Finish.'

3) I have an existing Analytics account and want to link my AdSense account to multiple profiles.
  1. On the 'Getting Started' page, you're prompted to select either 'Create my free Google Analytics account' or 'I already have a Google Analytics account. Please link it to this AdSense account.' Select the second option. Click 'Continue.'
  2. At Step 1, select the profiles you want to link to. Click 'Continue.'
  3. Select your primary domain. Click 'Continue' to finish. No code changes are necessary in this scenario as well. If you have multiple domains you want to link to, please read Scenario 3.

4) I have an existing Analytics account and want to link my AdSense account to multiple domains.
This scenario is for people who want to track more than one website in their Google Analytics account. For each website, you may have one or more profile assigned to it.
  3. Step 2 asks you to select a primary domain. Designate one of your websites as the primary domain. The primary domain requires no code changes, so if you have a site that's large, complex, or difficult to update the code for, that would typically be the site you should designate as your primary domain. Profiles for your other non-primary domains will require a modification to the tracking code.
  4. In Step 3, you'll see that there are no code changes required for your primary domain. For all other non-primary domains, there is an extra code snippet, the AdSense Analytics Code, to add. The AdSense Analytics Code should be added to the top of any non-primary website that contains your AdSense ads.
  5. Click 'Continue' to finish.

5) I have more than one Analytics account I want to link to.
You can only link one AdSense account to one Google Analytics account at this time.

*Please allow at least 24 hours for the data to populate in your reports. If you're having trouble linking your accounts, read I'm having trouble linking my AdSense account to Google Analytics.
